Home businesses work. People have been making money from home for years. It is not really a secret nor is it difficult.
Why do so many people fail at having a home business. The main fact is they do not know what they are doing. They may have a great product or service but it fails.
It makes no difference if you are starting a business online or offline, there are certain qualities and knowledge a person needs. This is where most people go wrong.
Lets look at qualities.
Mindset
A proper mindset is important. If you think you are going to fail, you will fail. If you
have no idea what to expect, chances are you will miss opportunities and again you will
fail. If you have the mindset nothing will stand in your way and you will not give up
failure is longer an option, success will be the result.
You need to have a positive mindset. This will be easy for some and very difficult for others.
The good thing is there is help to correct your mindset. You just need to apply it.
Attitude
Your business success will depend on your attitude towards your business.
A business is a business and you must look at it like that, no matter how small it is or how large.
This is important whether you are doing it part time or full time. I know a mother who works from home and does it around her family. Her family always comes first even while she is developing her business. She explains like this, “I work at it part-time, but I have a full-time attitude toward it.”
So, “If you treat it like a hobby you will develop a hobby attitude you will have a hobby income, if you have a business attitude and treat like it a business you will have a business income.”
You can be successful while working at it part-time and you can be successful while at it working full-time but it is very unlikely you will have any success working in your “spare time”. You need to have your time scheduled.
Fundamental Knowledge
Working Environment
Make a space you can call your own. Have it free from any distractions, a separate room, a corner of a room some place away from radios, T. Vs or other distractions.
Have a comfortable chair to sit in and an organized work space.
Have supplies in your area. Things like:
- pens
- highlighters
- stapler
- hole punch
- sticky tape
- note book(s)
- a simple filing system
- ring binders
- manilla folders
- or other supplies pertaining to your business
Take in account the value of a broadband connection. Your time is valuable and a broadband connection is faster and will enable you to accomplish more in your set time frame.
Schedule
You need to develop a schedule which will work for you, your family and your business. Set aside a block of time for your business and do nothing but work at your business. Just important is equal time for other commitments like – family time, self education ( reading, listening and viewing), “health time” (exercise, cooking and eating), and leisure time. Do not work during these other times, use that time for what you have set it aside for. This is one of the main reasons to work from home so you can spend more time with your family. Don’t let your working at home time take up your family time.
Remember you are working for yourself so your schedule (the time you choose) is your “boss”. If people phone you or drop in unexpectedly or maybe they are from out-of-town you need to make a choice. Are you committed to making your business successful? Will you make exceptions? It is your choice and only you can decide what to do under the circumstances.
You may need to involve your partner and children when deciding your business time so all understand and agrees on the times you are not be interrupted. Display this schedule in a place so all can see it and are aware of your time available.
Marketing Knowledge.
Whether you are planning a home business online or offline one common factor stands out,
marketing knowledge. Many people attempt to open a business without this knowledge. It is
not difficult to find information on marketing, it is hard to find good, easy to understand
and accurate knowledge.
You maybe thinking I have to go back to school and get a degree in marketing to be
successful, the truth is you don’t. I am not saying not to go ahead and get a degree
and further your education which is important, I am saying you do not need to. You do
need the knowledge however to be successful. You can gain this knowledge while building
your business.
Know Your Product or Service
After you have selected your product or service you want to offer, you need to know it inside out, or at least have a working knowledge of it. Let say you are offering e books you need to know what is in them and how much they are worth. If it is software you need to use and understand it. Doing this will develop a reputation for you of supplying quality information. Through your product knowledge you can become the preferred supplier.
In some cases it may not be practical, feasible or even desirable to use certain products (for example a woman may choose to sell man’s shoes or vice versa, this could cause some talk) in which case you won’t be a product user, but it is important you know the benefits and features of the product intimately.
Administration
Use good record keeping practices.
Talk with a tax adviser or the revenue people. They will be able to let you know the best way to set up your financial records and what records need to be kept. They may also suggest record keeping systems and what software may simplify this process of your business. Ask about the best arrangement for your bank accounts. You will most likely be advised to have a separate bank account.
It is important to keep track of all your logins, user-names and passwords. There are many software applications to help you with this, some are free and some you need to pay for.
You could a simple paper notebook or use free and commercial password keepers. There are many easy to use solutions on the market.
Computer Protection
Your computer is your lifeline. You need to protect all your business information, software you have on your computer to help with your business and your data stored on your computer.
You need a virus scanner, a personal firewall, anti-spyware and anti-adware and very important, an email scanner with the ability to delete suspected email from the server before it is downloaded to your computer. You may also want an anti spam program included. I get most viruses trying to come through email and I thank the anti virus program for stopping them.
A Domain Name
It is important to have a domain name or maybe even more than one. There are many services available but not all are equal, not all offer the same service and some can be a problem down the road. (I ran into one that proved to be a real pain in the butt). Some registrars are expensive and some inexpensive and you don’t necessarily get what you pay for in these cases.
Do not use a hosting service that registers your domain for you. This may lead to problems. Register your own domain name regardless of the advantages they tell you they can give you.
I had a host service register a domain name, the internet provider I had messed up and I lost my email account. They could not undo it and I had to change my account. This hosting service allowed the change of e-mail but did not allow access to the site and I had to go in the back door. When I decided I wanted to take control of my domain name they wouldn’t acknowledge or even talk to me about it due to the information they had did not match my email account.
To make a long story short I had to change the domain name and now I have to buy the original domain name if I want to use it.
Payment Processing
You will need away to receive payment online. You need a processor that will take credit cards.
There are many processors available, some work in some countries and not in others, some cost you lots of money in fees while others do not.
You want a processor that is well known to the public because most will not deal with ones they haven’t heard about and will not pass their information to them.
You could set up a merchant account through a bank but this is very costly and requires a lot of checks made by the institution which costs you money even if they refuse your application.
The most economical to get started is using an established on line service.
Email accounts
After establishing your domain use an associated email account. This will help you in promoting your business and enhances a more professional business image.
One last comment on your business, operate your business ethically, produce an outstanding service and proudly put your name to the products and or services you are offering. This will put you on he success track to establish a favorable long term internet business.
Home businesses work if you have all the right elements set up. it sounds like there is a lot to do setting yourself up in business and there is but it is not impossible nor difficult. There is plenty of information on the internet to help you. You just have to sort out the good from the bad.
You need to know the difference between marketing knowledge and a system. With all the hype out there it does get a little confusing, and you need to find to the real experts, the ones who desire to teach and the ones who main interest is to line their bank accounts, which is not an evil thing in itself unless done in a way to hurt others. A business must be a win, win, win situation to be successful
